Extended data:
The construction of the red flag canal project started in February 1960 and the supporting works of the branch canal were fully completed in July 1969, which lasted nearly ten years. The project has leveled 1250 mountains, erected 151 aqueducts, dug 211 tunnels, built 12408 buildings, excavated 22.25 million cubic meters of earth and stone. The total length of the main channel of the red flag canal is 70.6 km (Shicheng Town, Shanxi ~ Rencun Town, Henan). The main channels and branches are distributed in towns and townships of the whole city.
According to calculation, if these earth rock barriers are built into a wall 2 meters high and 3 meters wide, they can run through the north and south of the motherland, bypass Beijing and connect Guangzhou and Harbin.
The completion of the red flag canal has completely improved the poor living environment of the people in Lin County, solved the draft problem of 567000 people and 370000 livestock, irrigated 540000 mu of cultivated land, and increased the grain yield per mu from 100 kg in the early stage of the red flag canal to 476.3 kg in 1991. It is called "life canal" and "happiness canal" by the people of Linzhou.
