Afforestation can not only afforest and beautify our homes, but also expand mountain forest resources, prevent soil erosion, protect farmland, regulate climate and promote economic development. It is a grand project for the benefit of contemporary and future generations. In order to protect forestry resources, beautify the environment and maintain ecological balance, according to United Nations statistics, more than 50 countries in the world have established tree planting day.
On December 13, 1981, the fourth session of the Fifth National People's Congress discussed and adopted the resolution on launching the national voluntary tree planting campaign. This is the first major resolution made by the highest organ of state power on greening the motherland since the founding of the people's Republic of China. Since then, the national voluntary tree planting campaign has been implemented throughout the country as a law. On tree planting day in 1982, Comrade Deng Xiaoping took the lead in setting an example and planted the first tree of the voluntary tree planting movement on Yuquan mountain in Beijing.
